Second Street Children’s School (SSCS), is a private, non-profit, play-based, parent/guardian-participation preschool and kindergarten serving families in the greater Tucson metropolitan area. Located in the heart of the Sam Hughes residential neighborhood in central Tucson, SSCS occupies a historic site that has been used as a school since 1942, when young children from the then small town of Tucson would gather under the shade of four open-air ramadas to learn. Two of those ramadas still stand today. The school’s facilities have expanded to include four classrooms in a converted home and two large tree-shaded play-yards. SSCS now serves an economically and ethnically diverse, multi-lingual community with a rich year-round developmentally appropriate program. It is one of, if not the oldest, continuously operating preschools in Tucson and is unique because of its location in an actual neighborhood.
